For the vanilla simple syrup: 1/3 cup white granulated sugar 1/3 cup water 2 orange peel segments 1 whole vanilla bean For the cocktail: 1 ounce simple syrup 3 dashes bitters Ice cubes 3 ounces high-quality bourbon 1 orange peel segment cut into a 1” x 2” piece, optional
Combine the sugar, orange peels, vanilla bean and water in a small saucepan. Heat the water to a simmer and stir until sugar is completely dissolved, about five minutes.
Remove the syrup from the heat and allow it to cool. For a stronger flavor, leave the vanilla bean and the orange peels in the syrup while it cools. Remove both before serving.
Pour the simple syrup into the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass. Add the bitters. Add ice cubes.
Pour the bourbon over ice and stir to combine. Garnish with the orange peel.
