Ingredients

For the vanilla simple syrup:

  • 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 orange peel segments
  • 1 whole vanilla bean

For the Vanilla Bourbon Old Fashioned:

  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 3 dashes bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • 3 ounces high-quality bourbon
  • 1 orange peel segment cut into a 1” x 2” piece, optional

Instructions

For the vanilla simple syrup:

  • Combine sugar, orange peels, vanilla bean and water in a small saucepan.
  • Heat the water to a simmer and stir until sugar is completely dissolved, about five minutes.
  • Remove syrup from the heat and allow to cool. For a stronger flavor, leave the vanilla bean and the orange peels in the syrup while it cools. Remove both before serving.

For the Vanilla Bourbon Old Fashioned:

  • Pour the simple syrup into the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass.
  • Add the bitters.
  • Add ice cubes.
  • Pour the bourbon over ice and stir to combine.
  • Garnish with the orange peel.
