Bourbon Sazerac

The Sazerac is the official cocktail of New Orleans. Usually made with rye whiskey, a bourbon Sazerac combines bourbon, absinthe and bitters.

Ingredients

For the simple syrup:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

For the bourbon sazerac:

  • 1/2 ounce Absinthe
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Sliced lemon peel

Instructions

For the simple syrup:

  • Heat the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  • Simmer until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Allow the simple syrup to cool before using.

For the bourbon sazerac:

  • Pour the Absinthe into an old-fashioned glass. Roll the Absinthe around the glass to coat the bottom and sides, then dump the excess.
  • Add bourbon, simple syrup and bitters in an ice-filled tumbler.
  • Stir, then strain into the absinthe-rinsed glass.
  • Garnish with a lemon peel. Serve without ice.
