Meat Sauce for Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 pound lean ground sirloin
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion chopped
  • 8 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1 package 8 oz of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 3 6 oz cans tomato paste
  • 2 15 oz cans canned tomato sauce
  • ½ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian flat leaf parsley

Instructions

  • In a large pot with lid, cook sausage, ground sirloin, onion, mushrooms, and garlic in olive oil over medium heat until well browned.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and balsamic vinegar.
  • Season with sugar, basil, oregano, thyme, bay leaves, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley.
  • Simmer on low, covered, for at least 1½ - 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Makes about 3 quarts of sauce
