The holidays are officially here, ya’ll. It’s time to skip the diet for the next four weeks. Delectable treats that only make an appearance once a year will be in your face at every turn. I say indulge. You can make peace with the scale in January.
Before The Husband and I became mama and daddy, we loved to entertain. For a few years we even hosted a holiday party. Now that our boys siphon most of our energy require most of our attention, I’m happy to let someone else do the holiday hosting. Or at least keep things low key.
I love the idea of a cookie exchange. Invite 5-10 friends over and have each friend bring a different type of cookie to sample and share. I have seen recommendations that every person should bring a dozen cookies for each person in attendance plus another dozen for sampling. Depending on how big your party is, that is A LOT of cookies! I say scale back. Bring one dozen for sampling during the party and enough for each guest to take home at least four cookies of each kind.
Set up a packing station for your guests to pack up their cookies to take home at the end of the night. If party planning is your thing, by all means go all out with the packing supplies. Craft and party supply stores and even the Dollar Store have no shortage of boxes, bags, twine, tags and cute accessories your guests can use to make their take-home goodies look festive. However, if you are like my friends, wine will be involved. We would be just as happy to pack our cookies in those disposable pans with the plastic lids.
Keep in mind, sturdy cookies – like the cookie exchange recipes I have listed below – tend to hold up better than delicate ones. And I’m probable safe in assuming that not all of your friends are bakers, so don’t be offended if someone shows up with slice and bake. Take a deep breath and remember the reason for the season.
Egg Nog Cookies with Buttercream Icing – even if you don’t love egg nog, you will love these cookies. They are very cake-like, almost like a tea cake, and the buttercream icing is to die for.
S’mores Cookies – How cute are these cookies? Not only are they adorable, but who wouldn’t love s’mores in cookie form?
Loaded Cookies with Pretzels, Coconut, and M&M’s – ever eat something sweet and them immediately crave something salty? With salty crushed pretzels and sweet candy baked right into the batter, these cookies satisfy every craving.
Homemade Moon Pies – transport yourself back to childhood. These are a little more work, but they will be the hit of the party.
Chocolate Chip Cookies from Scratch – because, come on, everyone loves homemade chocolate chip cookies, right?
