For most people, September signals the end of summer and the arrival of Fall. The next time you peruse your favorite farmer’s market, you may notice summer produce such as strawberries, peaches, watermelons and tomatoes have slowly been phased out and replaced with fall produce.
If you’re anything like me, perusing my farmer’s market always gets my creative juices flowing. You may be tempted to buy up a bushel of gorgeous juicy plums, but then wonder what to do with them once you get them home. As you can see, though summer is over there is still an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available.
To keep this post from becoming overwhelming, I’ve decided to stick to four varieties for this edition — plums, apples, pears, and muscadines. Go ahead, buy up all that gorgeous fall produce and get to cooking.
Don’t say good by to stone fruits for the season just yet. Rich, purple, sweet plums are hitting the markets. The Husband likes to eat these raw like an apple. I like them in tarts, pies, or a batch of homemade jam.

After the lovable pumpkin, apples are probably the most popular of fall produce. It can be served in both sweet and savory dishes, not to mention raw as a crunchy snack, making it a versatile fruit.

If you’re not from the South, you may be wondering — what is a muscadine? It’s a type of grape and it has a very distinct flavor. Around here, people use it to make everything from jam to wine.
