There is nothing like a big bowl of yummy snack mix to bring people together. Whether it’s at a party, watching a football game, or rolling down the highway during a road trip, something tasty and crunchy just has a way of bringing people together.
My husband’s Homemade Chex Mix has been a family favorite for three generations. And I love it! But I’ve been wanting to play around with the flavors and textures for awhile, and it all started when I was introduced to Minerva Dairy’s Garlic and Herb butter.
About Minerva Dairy
Ohio-based Minerva Dairy has been making butter for 125 years, making them the oldest family-owned creamery in America. I prefer to use their unsalted butter for baking — like in these Bacon Blueberry Scones or Sweet Potato Tarts with Marshmallow Meringue — because the high butterfat content gives my baked goods a flaky texture and rich flavor. But my favorite flavor of Minerva Dairy butter, hands down, is the Garlic Herb.
This butter is amazing on a slice of warm, toasted homemade bread. I also like to toss it with cooked fettucine and shrimp when I make my 10-Minute Easy Shrimp Scampi. A few weeks ago, I used the butter to season some plain oyster crackers and love it. That’s when the idea for this snack mix was planted in my head.
How to make Buttery Seasoned Snack Mix
First, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
Place two sticks of Minerva Dairy garlic and herb butter in the middle of the baking pan along with 4 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. Place the pan I the oven and allow the butter to melt. This will only take a few minutes.
While the butter is melting, combine three cups of cheese crackers (like Cheez-Its), two cups of mini twist pretzels and two cups of corn and rice cereal (like Crispix) in a large mixing bowl.
Once the butter has melted, add one teaspoon of onion powder and two or three teaspoons of red pepper flakes. Two teaspoons added just a hint of spiciness and my kids were still able to enjoy it. Add more red pepper flakes to add more heat.
Pour the cracker/cereal mixture over the melted butter and stir until everything is completely coated with the butter mixture. Then return the pan to the oven and roast for 10 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle ¼ cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the top. Stir to combine. Then add the popcorn and gently mix it in.
Return the pan to the oven and roast for an additional ten minutes. Allow the snack mix to cool slightly before serving. It can be eaten at this point, but truthfully, I prefer it the day after. The butter has had time to absorb into the crackers and the flavors really develop after 24 hours.
How long will the snack mix last?
Store the cooled snack at room temperature in a large zippered storage bag or a plastic or glass container with an airtight lid. If stored properly, this snack mix can stay fresh for 4-6 weeks (if it even lasts that long).
Can you freeze snack mix?
Believe it or not, you can! I recommend storing the snack mix in an airtight plastic container if you’re going to do this. A plastic bag makes the snack mix more susceptible to getting crushed if it gets moved around and glass has the risk of shattering when frozen.
I recommend eating the frozen snack mix within one month. Allow the container to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to one hour to thaw. Then serve as usual.
